Bush Recount Attorney to Help with Israeli Election Controversy

George Terwilliger, a top leader for the 2000 Bush election team, has been engaged by Stand Up America, a grassroots U.S. national security organization, to head up a team of legal experts to evaluate the developing Israeli election controversy. In the Kadima party primary election, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni won by 431 votes out of 39,872 over Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz as they vied for party leadership and the office of Prime Minister. Stand Up America is concerned that corruption allegations in the election could call into question the credibility of the future Israeli government, undermining Israel's security and deterrence, leading to further destabilization in the Middle East.

Terwilliger, of the law firm White & Case LLP, is a prominent legal expert in Washington, D.C. and a former United States Deputy Attorney General, the number two official at the U.S. Department of Justice. Terwilliger was a lead counsel on the 2000 Bush legal team, including in the U.S. Supreme Court. He also served as counsel to a U.S. Senate committee investigating a contested Senate election and has been counsel to numerous elected and appointed officials in other proceedings.

Stand Up America's goal is to ensure that the national security interests of both Israel and the U.S. are not jeopardized by an election that has already been called into question by allegations of corruption and fraud in the electoral process. "Those national security interests could be adversely affected if the legality of the election of the next prime minister remains questioned," said Lt. Gen. Thomas G. McInerney, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), a Director, and Maj. Gen. Paul E. Vallely, U.S. Army (Ret.), CEO, of Stand Up America.

"The electoral process is the heart of democracy," said Terwilliger. "Our aim is to do what we can to help ensure that the electoral process produces a credible election result, regardless of who wins."

The Israeli team is calling for a full investigation of all alleged illegalities before Mrs. Livni is allowed to continue in the process of forming a coalition government. They have requested either a recount or a new election to address the irregularities in the past election process.

The U.S. legal team has consulted with the Israeli lawyers, headed by Mr. Zion Amir, who are currently working on a judicial challenge of the election results. The U.S. team has initiated discussions with the Israeli attorneys in this case, which could reach the Israeli Supreme Court.
