Weekly Commentary: Israeli Policy Towards Egyptian Military Cannot Be Shortsighted

Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 28 March 2013

There is no question that Israel's relations with the Egyptian military are particularly critical as we witness the upheaval and tremendous uncertainty regarding the future of our neighbor and first Arab peace partner.

However, by the same token, there could be devastating consequences for the Jewish State in the medium and long term if our decision making process relating to Egypt gave priority to our relations with the military at the expense of all other considerations.

A few examples:

1.    As is the case for any army, the leadership of the Egyptian military would like to be equipped with the most advanced and powerful weapons systems available.  When Israeli defense experts determine that the supply of a given American system could significantly impair Israel's security, the policymakers have to weigh this concern against the possible damage that Israeli objections to the transaction could have on relations with the Egyptian military.

2.    Egyptian military operations in the area of the Egyptian-Gaza border using forces and equipment beyond the scope permitted by the peace agreement with Israel that threaten to erode the critical security buffer provided by the peace agreement also represent a serious challenge for Israeli policymakers.

3.    The nature and extent of possible Egyptian activity within the Gaza Strip itself is even more complicated.  As incredible as it may sound, given all of the uncertainty regarding the future of Egypt, there are still some Israelis advocating that Egyptian forces deploy in the Gaza Strip.

No. There are no simple answers.

But one thing is clear: Israeli policymakers cannot afford to make the
critical simplifying assumption that what is today will also be tomorrow and the next month, year or decade.

Whatever we may know about the current Egyptian military leadership, we have absolutely no way of knowing who or what will be giving the orders to the Egyptian Army in the future.
